Daijohn Richards, 23, was questioned by authorities after seeking treatment for a shoulder wound but was discharged before police identified him as a suspect in the violent attack on a Canadian CEO’s family.
A masked gunman allegedly involved in a violent home invasion at a Canadian business executive’s residence was allowed to leave a Toronto hospital after police questioned him about a gunshot wound, authorities said.
Daijohn Richards, 23, a Toronto native, is now facing armed robbery charges and is the subject of a Canada-wide warrant in connection with the break-in at the $2.1 million home of MAC Group CEO David Morton. The incident unfolded Thursday in the affluent Bridle Path neighborhood of Toronto.
Morton, 75, his wife, Doriana Zohil-Morton, and their adult daughters were reportedly attacked during the terrifying intrusion. Investigators allege that Richards and two other men were involved in the incident, which left the family facing a violent and potentially life-threatening ordeal.
Amid the chaos, Richards was allegedly shot in the shoulder by one of the other perpetrators, according to investigators. He subsequently checked himself into a Toronto hospital to receive treatment for his injury.
While Richards was at the hospital, police conducted what they described as a “number of interactions” with him. The questioning was carried out under a longstanding policy concerning individuals who arrive at medical facilities with gunshot wounds.
Despite those interactions, Richards was discharged from the hospital without being arrested. Authorities said investigators did not have sufficient evidence at the time to establish his involvement in the home invasion.
The situation changed on Saturday, when Toronto police publicly identified Richards as a suspect in the case. He now faces armed robbery charges, and a Canada-wide warrant has been issued for his arrest.
The developments have drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding the hospital encounter and the investigation into the violent attack on the Morton family.
Police continue to pursue Richards in connection with the alleged home invasion, while the case underscores the challenges investigators can face when attempting to establish a suspect’s involvement in a crime during its earliest stages.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against Richards have yet to be proven in court.
