The actor says his wife had emergency brain surgery just days before the Academy Awards but surprised him by joining him at the Vanity Fair after-party once she felt well enough.
Matt Damon has opened up about a frightening health scare involving his wife, Luciana Damon, revealing that she underwent brain surgery for an aneurysm just one week before the 2024 Academy Awards.
In a recent GQ Men of the Year cover interview, the actor reflected on his experiences surrounding the Oscars, including a memorable night when Luciana surprised him by joining him at the Vanity Fair after-party despite having recently undergone surgery.
Matt, 56, and Luciana, 50, married in 2005 and share four daughters: Alexia, Luciana’s daughter from a previous marriage whom Matt considers his stepdaughter, as well as Isabella, Gia and Stella.
Damon spoke about missing the 2007 Academy Awards, when The Departed won Best Picture. At the time, he was filming The Bourne Ultimatum and watching the ceremony at home in Miami with Luciana.
He recalled being excited when Martin Scorsese won Best Director, but said he had not expected The Departed to take home the top award.
“I remember being really excited,” Damon said, describing how he jumped up and down in the bedroom when Scorsese won. “And then the next category was best picture, and The Departed won. And I realized in that moment I hadn’t even considered that that could happen.”
The experience stayed with him, making his decision to attend the 2024 Oscars for Oppenheimer especially meaningful.
Damon revealed that the week leading up to the 2024 ceremony had been an especially difficult time for the couple.
“And then the next time that that happened was on Oppenheimer, and we had this whole scary thing happen where my wife had a brain aneurysm,” he said.
The actor explained that Luciana underwent brain surgery the week before the Oscars. Thankfully, he said, she recovered well.
“She’s totally fine, thank God,” Damon said.
He added that the Vanity Fair after-party marked the first evening Luciana felt strong enough to get up and had regained her energy.
Despite the recent surgery, Luciana surprised Damon by getting dressed and joining him for the celebration.
Damon said she remembered how he had missed the Oscars festivities in 2007 and wanted to make sure they enjoyed the moment together this time.
“She surprised me and got a dress and we went out to the after-party, because she remembered that the last time it happened, I didn’t do it,” he recalled.
“And she was like, ‘This time we’re going out.’”
Damon described his wife’s decision as “pretty” heroic and said it meant a great deal to him.
